When it comes to geoscience, Anchorage rocks

Did you know that Anchorage, Alaska has recently been named one of the top cities for geoscientists in the nation?

Some major factors that contribute to this ranking are high average salaries within the industry (average is over $100k); numerous opportunities for employment in both private and government agencies; and active recruitment of graduates from local universities. This includes recruiting Alaskan students who choose to return to the state after graduating from an out-of-state college.

According to the University of Alaska’s Geology Department chair, students who graduate from the program can look forward to a 100% job placement rate- so college freshmen, take note.

Also, the high costs of living in Alaska’s largest city are often offset by the high median salary- just another perk of being a geoscientist living and working in the 49th State.

Geoscientists are directly involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas.
Within the energy industry, most geologists work either in mineral extraction, petroleum or environmental firms.

With new and continuing exploration and development projects underway all over Alaska, the need for professionals specializing in the geosciences is posed to be a stable and critical force for years to come.

Working in oil and gas pays off for new graduates

From Spindletop to The Beverly Hillbillies to natural gas shale-plays in Texas and South Dakota, oil pays.

And these days…it pays big.

Energy careers are in high demand, especially for oil and gas engineers. If you’ve got the training to become one after you’ve earned a bachelor’s degree, expect to be paid handsomely. According to OilGrads, a petroleum engineer had an average starting salary of $60,718 as of 2007. And energy engineers and geoscientists are some of the highest-earning professions in the United States.

But even if you don’t have a degree yet, there are still many entry-level positions available. Many popular positions include radio operators, engineers, welders, and heavy machine operators. If you’ve completed some classes towards a degree or possess related work experience, you can reap the benefits of on-the-job training from many companies. Learning on the job provides greater knowledge and hands-on experience, which in turn leads to big promotions—and higher salaries.

While the compensation may be attractive, it’s not about the money for many new graduates. It’s about embarking on what many consider to be a noble quest to fulfill the global demand for energy. With over nine million jobs in the US (and counting) coming from the oil and gas industry, the future looks bright for new grads interested in oil and gas.
