Better Business Bureau Recognizes The Global Edge Consultants with Winner of Distinction Award

In recognizing businesses and non-profits for their achievements and commitment to quality in the workplace, The Global Edge was one of 292 companies recognized at the annual Better Business Bureau Awards of Excellence on May 10, 2017.

Recognized as a Winner of Distinction, this was the second year in a row to be recognized by the Better Business Bureau for service excellence.

The Global Edge Gives Back- 2nd Annual Kendra Scott PHA Benefit

As I was sitting watching the big screen at AT&T Stadium at the Texas High School Football Championships, I was in awe of the festive and prideful colors everyone displayed. One of the most common elements I notice on ladies of both sides was Kendra Scott jewelry – earrings in bright reds and greens, necklaces in blacks and crimsons – but the iconic shapes were noticeable no matter what team the wearer’s were rooting for. Kendra Scott started in Austin, Texas, so it is not a surprise on the huge market permeation it has across Texas but there is more to Kendra Scott than just pretty jewelry.

Kendra Scott, LLC runs with three core values – Family, Fashion and Philanthropy. Kendra Scott herself is a strong female CEO who has giving at the front and center of everything she does. “I was inspired to create a business that did something more, that gave back to the community in real, meaningful ways.” Kendra Scott it seems is very similar to our own Kathy Eberwein. Social Responsibility is one of Global Edge’s five core values and is at the heart of several of the programs we run throughout the year. Global Edge continues to help the local community through YMCA programs and has been a long time supporter of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association through local events and fundraisers. In addition, Global Edge has supported Right 2 Thrive. Down the road, Kathy hopes that through her successes at Global Edge she will be able to build an orphanage and school to help children in Africa.

Global Edge is excited to be partnering with Kendra Scott on Market Street in The Woodlands for the second year. Employees as Global Edge have worked to host an event on Tuesday, March 28th to benefit the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. At this Kendra Gives Back event, Kendra Scott will donate 20% of all proceeds raised to the PHA, with a focus on research, education, and awareness for this disease. We could not be more pleased to support a company with similar values and an association with a cause near and dear to us.

And then as looked back down at the field, it was halftime of The Woodlands High School game against Austin Lake Travis, and another inspiring sight was to be seen. The marching band of Austin Lake Travis had formed a #21 in honor of Grant Milton, the Woodlands Highlander player who had emergency brain surgery following an injury sustained during a game on November 26th. The community has been rallying behind the high school senior and his family, and it was refreshing to see the rivals reach out and support The Woodlands High School community as well. Keeping in the spirit of giving, Global Edge sponsored a bus with SNG transportation to transport local Woodlands residents to the game to raise money for the #MiltonStrong campaign.

In these times where the news seems to be focused on the negative, we are proud to be working to give back to our global communities and to be partnering with some great companies. While the oil and gas industry may ebb and flow, the tide of giving will always be at the center of Global Edge and we look forward to doing more good in 2017.

Automated Recruitment– Not On Your Nelly Sunshine!

So, my blog is in direct relation to a post I responded to recently on the web. An Online Recruitment Expert claimed in his post that the end of the traditional Recruitment Agency is nigh and rise of the automated Recruiter is upon us.

Of course I felt compelled to reply, instantly!

He (shall remain nameless) states, with a flick of a switch (and the use of complicated algorithms/ logarithms) – machines will replace humans in the search, selection and headhunting arena.

What a load of old tripe! James Cameron could not have written a better storyline – wait, he already did!!!

Over my 19-year Recruitment career, I’ve been involved in every aspect (good, bad & ugly) of the recruitment process. There isn’t a computer in the world that could mop up a tear, jump up in excitement or pull out the last few remaining hairs on my head – all the emotions we Recruiters experience, usually on a daily basis and usually before lunch.

Don’t get me wrong – Technology has made the whole process a billion times easier – well, let me rephrase that – Technology has made communication a billion times easier – Recruitment to me, will always be matching the right person to the right job at the right time.

I still remember sifting through archived files of paper Resumes, manually formatting them using a typewriter and hand delivering profiles to client because the fax machine kept jamming. We met almost every candidate – there was no email or internet, and you were lucky to have any sort of database. Sales involved going through the local telephone directory and chasing hot leads by going through the classifieds in the local newspaper.

Some of you may read this and think recruitment used to be primitive, almost prehistoric – and you’d be correct. It’s these experiences that teach you the principals of Recruitment, those years slogging through your evenings and weekends to fill ‘that’ job.

So, my point is – like so many failed ‘dating websites’ that claim to match the perfect couples, automated systems that match up people simply don’t work. Ask yourself, why do we not have automated Referees, Umpires or Adjudicators in Sport – I am sure it’s possible to program a computer the laws of any game, so why don’t we use them – Simple, People want to, and enjoy interacting with People – we gauge so much in each other’s tone of voice, body language and emotion – we are social creatures, spoilt by technology.

In a world dominated by social media and faceless communication, every once in a while, it’s nice to have that phone conversation or face-to-face meet – it makes us feel alive, and that’s certainly something a computer isn’t.

So Mr. Automation, I am sorry – I don’t agree with your statements forecasting our imminent recruitment doom – when careers, lives and households are at stake, I want to hear a friendly, informed, professional voice – rather like my own !!

It’s the time of year again when the beginning of the school year is almost in sight! The YMCA has given the Global Edge the wonderful opportunity to impact the lives of over of half of Houston’s children through Operation Backpack. Between now and August 12, 2016, we will be collecting supplies for donation. You can help us by:

  1. 1. Purchase a backpack
  2. 2. Fill it with school supplies (a list is provided for guidance)
  3. 3. Drop it off at our office
  4. 4. Feel rewarded for helping children in our community!
  5. 5. Tell your friends and family members about this initiative and encourage participation! Offer to drop off their donations and ask any teachers you know about ways to save money!

Flood Safety Tips

Flood Safety Tips

 In Texas, flash flooding is a realistic danger and with the recent weather in the Houston area we figured a refresher on flood safety tips was just what our readers needed! Staying safe during a flood is a matter of preparation and planning. If you live in an area of recurrent or likely flooding, it is important to have a plan of action. In order to keep yourself and loved ones safe, there are a few things to keep in mind.

One: if flash flood warnings are announced, be sure to have an area of higher ground to retreat to. A second story of a home or public building nearby your residence that you can easily get to is key. Although some may think the following statement is obvious, try to avoid any type of driving or commuting when there is heavy rain and potential flooding.

If it isn’t absolutely necessary, do your best to stay indoors. According to, “just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down”, and “2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away”. If you must walk outside, make sure you aren’t in rushing water. National Geographic recommends using “a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.” But the best alternative is to stay indoors as much as possible.

Also, if you have children, it’s wise to educate them about what to do and where to go in case a flood occurs beforehand, so they don’t panic in the moment. Next, be prepared. According to, they advise you to “pack a bag with important items in case you need to evacuate. Don’t forget to include needed medications.” This way, in case you need to evacuate, you can do so in a timely manner and don’t have to worry about forgetting anything.

The National Geographic also warns you to “disconnect electrical appliances” in order to avoid electrocution. The best way to handle a natural disaster is to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Leave nothing to chance and take all precautions to ensure your own safety and the safety of those around you.

Global Edge Gives Back: Right2Thrive

Right2Thrive is an organization that establishes locally based programs to improve living conditions in poverty and establish self-sustaining communities. Right2Thrive flourishes off the belief that education and everyday skill training are keys to breaking the vicious cycle of poverty. They work as partner to that said community to build programs that help locals learn, develop, and strive off their new skills.

The programs provide the residents of the community with skills to develop new businesses, develop leadership skills, and help the residents increase the likelihood of financial means to send their family to school and improve their overall health and living. This year, The Global Edge worked with Right2Thrive in Kenya. Kenya is an extremely poverty stricken country where most of the families are not able to provide, so most children sadly end up in an orphanage. Not because the family no longer desires them, but because the family simply does not have the means to support them. This is why Right2Thrive in Kenya has decided to launch programs to keep these families, and future families, together.

The ladies in Kenya produced purses out of recycled supplies such as the local newspaper, magazines, etc. The Global Edge distributed the purses, along with a small presentation about Right2Thrive, at our 2016 Holiday Party and they were a great hit! We were also able to raise an additional donation for Right2Thrive. This donation abled the organization to add three new students to their Education Scholarship Program.

Pictured below is Shailla. Shailla is 8 years old and lives with her Aunt who has newborn twin boys. This is Shailla’s first time enrolled in school and she is so excited! We at the Global Edge are just as excited for her and can’t wait to see what she does!

Staying on Track: Immigration Training

The Global Edge is continuously looking to improve the level of service to its clients and as part of this commitment arranged for me to train with the attorneys at Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen and Loewy, LLP, the world’s largest firm practicing exclusively in corporate immigration law. US immigration laws for business-based visas are constantly changing and are extremely complex and the training I received at Fragomen’s Atlanta office will allow Global Edge to address visa-related items more effectively and efficiently.

In my training course I received instruction and advice from experienced immigration attorneys on variety of business immigration issues that tend to arise in our line of business. An overview of the main types of work type visas was presented, which included H1B, H2B, E3, TN1, L1, E2 , and J1.

Given that the H1B Visa is the primary US visa utilized to bring professionals from all over the world to the US, the training took an in depth look at the process of submitting the proper documentation for this type of visa and advice on how to effectively address issues that may appear during the process. The H1B Visa can lead to permanent residency via the issuance of a Green Card. As such, the Green Card application and the Adjustment of Status procedure were also covered in detail. The Global Edge is confident that this in-house investment in immigration law knowledge will pay immediate dividends to our clients.

Books & Candy & Trinkets Oh My! YCMA Toy Drive and Happy Holidays!

As we head into the holiday season of 2015, I look back at this year and feel much gratitude. Though the price of oil has gone down and it has made things tough in the industry, I still have my health, was able to marry my best friend this year surrounded by family and friends, and I work for a company that understands that giving back and making the world a better place is what it is all about. We work behind a leader, Kathy Eberwein, who has always stressed the importance of community involvement and we have been fortunate enough to assist with helping several great causes this year. We were able to support the Pulmonary Hypertension Association through the Woodlands CrawPHish Festival, the Lonestar Golf Tournament, Bal du Moulin Rouge and an event at Elaine Turner in Market Street. We have helped sponsor events for local high schools, Anadarko’s Sky High for St. Jude, the BP MS150 and the United States Submarine Veterans. Right 2 Thrive is an organization Global Edge has been involved with that helps with women’s economic empowerment in Kenya by supporting a handbag business. And the YMCA of Southern Montgomery County we have supported with Operation Backpack, the annual Dragonboat Races, and our last event of 2015, Spreading Holiday Cheer Angel Tree, by donating to underprivileged children in the area. Our sincere gratitude to all of those who helped us give back this year and the opportunity to continue reaching out next year. 6th Annual BABC Business Awards- Buzzing With Excitement!

My first experience of attending the recent 6th Annual BABC business awards was an excellent insight into the organization and a great networking opportunity. The Global Edge team arrived as finalists and left as winners, which was a fantastic achievement for the business and all involved.

The room was filled with a diverse range of people from various different backgrounds in addition to Americans and Brits, which was encouraging. Many of the members had served for many years on the committee and the board, and their stories were interesting and filled with history.

With a strong focus on helping its companies build international growth, we heard a very interesting talk from Martin carver from Primeast. Martin’s talk demonstrated the importance of utilizing diversity for performance in business. Interestingly, Martin spoke about values in the workplace as well as leadership and how using the Barrett Values pyramid is a tool that can be used to demonstrate that our personal values as employees are the foundation for our individual and team motivation.

When the awards began, The Global Edge was delighted to have won the Small to Mid-Sized International business award in recognition for the company’s performance and success in transatlantic commerce.

Many of our clients were also at the luncheon, and it was good to share stories and find out what 2016 has in store for a number of the organizations ahead. Despite challenging times in the oil and gas market, the luncheon still had a buzz of excitement with what is to come which was certainly promising.
